As usual the Altar Glen Mass will honour St Oliver Plunkett marking this year the 400th anniversary of his birth.
Born 1st November 1625 at Loughcrew, Oldcastle, Co. Meath; ordained priest in Rome 1654; at this time the public practice of Catholicism was banned, and Catholic clergy were executed so it was impossible for Oliver to return to Ireland for many years. He petitioned to remain in Rome and, in 1657, became a professor of theology. On 9th July 1669 he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh,, and was ordained bishop on 30 November at Ghent, Belgium. He eventually set foot on Irish soil again on 7 March 1670. His ministry was a successful one and he is said to have confirmed 48,000 Catholics over a four-year period. In 1678 the so-called Popish Plot, concocted in England by clergyman Titus Oates, led to further anti-Catholic action and Oliver Plunkett again went into hiding. The Privy Council of England, was told that Oliver had plotted a French invasion. He was arrested in Dublin on 6 December 1679 and imprisoned in Dublin Castle, and moved to Newgate Prison in London in order to face trial at Westminster Hall. He was found guilty of high treason in June 1681 “for promoting the Roman faith” and was condemned to death. Oliver Plunkett was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn (a plaque near Marble Arch marks the place) on 1 July 1681, aged 55, the last Catholic martyr to die in England and declared a saint 12th October 1975. In 1997 St Oliver Plunkett was made a patron saint for peace and reconciliation in Ireland.
